Position Summary

The Pharmacy Technician supports licensed pharmacists in providing exceptional pharmaceutical care to customers in a high-volume retail supermarket pharmacy setting. This position involves prescription processing, customer service, inventory management, and administrative duties while maintaining the highest standards of accuracy, safety, and customer satisfaction in a fast-paced retail environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Prescription Processing

  • Receive and process prescription orders from customers, physicians’ offices, and electronic systems
  • Enter prescription data accurately into pharmacy computer systems
  • Verify patient information, insurance coverage, and prescription details
  • Calculate days supply, copayments, and process insurance claims
  • Prepare prescription labels and select appropriate medications and supplies
  • Assist pharmacists with prescription verification and dispensing processes

Customer Service Excellence

  • Provide friendly, knowledgeable customer service at pickup and drop-off windows
  • Answer telephone calls and address customer inquiries regarding prescriptions and pharmacy services
  • Explain insurance copayments, deductibles, and prior authorization requirements
  • Process prescription transfers between pharmacies
  • Handle customer complaints and concerns with professionalism and empathy
  • Promote pharmacy services including immunizations, medication therapy management, and wellness programs

Inventory Management

  • Maintain adequate stock levels of prescription medications and over-the-counter products
  • Process pharmaceutical orders and receive shipments from wholesalers
  • Perform cycle counts and maintain accurate inventory records
  • Handle controlled substance inventory in accordance with DEA regulations
  • Remove expired medications and process returns to wholesalers
  • Organize and maintain pharmacy shelving and storage areas

Administrative Functions

  • Process insurance billing and handle rejected claims
  • Maintain patient profiles and medication history records
  • File prescriptions and maintain required documentation
  • Assist with prior authorization requests and appeals
  • Generate reports for inventory, sales, and regulatory compliance
  • Support quality assurance programs and medication error prevention initiatives

Regulatory Compliance

  • Adhere to state and federal pharmacy laws and regulations
  • Maintain HIPAA compliance and protect patient confidentiality
  • Follow controlled substance handling and record-keeping requirements
  • Participate in pharmacy audits and inspections
  • Complete required continuing education and training programs

Qualifications

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Current Texas Pharmacy Technician license or certification
  • National certification preferred (CPhT through PTCB or ExCPT through NHA)
  • Minimum 6 months of retail pharmacy experience preferred
  • Strong mathematical and computer skills
  • Excellent communication and customer service abilities

Preferred:

  • Previous supermarket or retail chain pharmacy experience
  • Bilingual capabilities (Spanish highly preferred in Texas markets)
  • Associates degree or post-secondary education
  • Experience with major pharmacy management systems (QS/1, PioneerRx, etc.)
  • Knowledge of insurance processing and third-party billing

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency with pharmacy computer systems and point-of-sale terminals
  • Familiarity with insurance processing and prior authorization procedures
  • Basic understanding of pharmaceutical calculations
  • Knowledge of common medications, strengths, and dosage forms
  • Ability to operate pharmacy equipment including counting machines and label printers

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods (8+ hours)
  • Frequent lifting of packages up to 30 pounds
  • Manual dexterity for accurate counting and medication handling
  • Visual acuity for reading prescription labels and computer screens
  • Ability to reach, bend, and access items on various shelf levels
  • Clear speech and hearing for customer communication

Work Environment

  • Fast-paced retail supermarket pharmacy with high prescription volume
  • Open pharmacy layout integrated with grocery store operations
  • Frequent customer interactions and telephone calls
  • Variable scheduling including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Potential exposure to pharmaceutical dust and cleaning chemicals
  • Multi-tasking environment with frequent interruptions

Performance Expectations

  • Maintain prescription accuracy rate of 99.5% or higher
  • Meet or exceed customer service satisfaction scores
  • Process minimum number of prescriptions per hour as established by management
  • Achieve insurance claim acceptance rate targets
  • Complete continuing education requirements within specified timeframes
  • Maintain professional appearance and adherence to dress code

Shift Options

  • Full-time: 32-40 hours per week
