Military Hospital – San Antonio, Texas

Position Summary

The Nurse Practitioner provides comprehensive healthcare services to active duty military personnel, veterans, military dependents, and authorized beneficiaries in a military hospital setting. This position involves direct patient care across multiple specialties, health promotion activities, and support of military readiness initiatives. The role requires expertise in managing complex medical conditions while understanding the unique healthcare needs of military populations and their families.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Primary Care Services

  • Conduct comprehensive health assessments, physical examinations, and preventive care for military personnel and families
  • Diagnose and manage acute and chronic medical conditions including diabetes, hypertension, respiratory infections, and musculoskeletal injuries
  • Prescribe medications, therapies, and medical devices in accordance with scope of practice and military protocols
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests including laboratory work, imaging studies, and specialty consultations
  • Provide health education and counseling on disease prevention, lifestyle modifications, and wellness initiatives

Military-Specific Healthcare

  • Perform deployment health assessments (pre-deployment, post-deployment, and annual)
  • Evaluate and treat service-related injuries and occupational health conditions
  • Support flight medicine evaluations and fitness-for-duty determinations
  • Manage military personnel with combat-related trauma, PTSD, and readjustment disorders in coordination with mental health services
  • Participate in mass casualty exercises and emergency preparedness training

Specialized Clinical Services

  • Provide care in assigned specialty clinics (internal medicine, family practice, women’s health, occupational health)
  • Manage patients with complex medical conditions requiring interdisciplinary care coordination
  • Perform procedures including joint injections, skin biopsies, minor surgical procedures, and gynecological examinations
  • Support emergency department coverage during high-volume periods or staff shortages
  • Participate in inpatient consultations and hospital medicine services as needed

Population Health and Prevention

  • Implement preventive care protocols including immunizations, cancer screenings, and health maintenance activities
  • Conduct health promotion programs for military personnel and families
  • Participate in public health initiatives and disease surveillance activities
  • Support military readiness through fitness evaluations and medical clearances
  • Collaborate with occupational health services on workplace safety and injury prevention

Administrative and Professional Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate documentation in military electronic health record systems (AHLTA, MHS GENESIS)
  • Ensure compliance with military medical regulations, Joint Commission standards, and professional nursing standards
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and evidence-based practice implementation
  • Mentor nursing students, new graduate nurses, and junior healthcare providers
  • Complete mandatory military hospital training and continuing education requirements

Qualifications

Required:

  • Master’s or Doctoral degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program
  • Current unrestricted RN license in Texas
  • National certification as a Nurse Practitioner (AANP or ANCC)
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification
  • Ability to obtain and maintain appropriate security clearance
  • Minimum 2 years of clinical experience as an RN, acute care experience preferred
  • DEA license for controlled substance prescribing

Preferred:

  • Previous military or federal healthcare experience
  • Board certification in specialty area (family practice, adult-gerontology, women’s health)
  • Advanced certification in emergency or critical care
  • Bilingual capabilities (Spanish highly preferred for San Antonio population)
  • Experience with military healthcare systems and protocols
  • Flight nurse or aerospace medicine experience for aviation-related duties

Clinical Competencies:

  • Advanced assessment and diagnostic skills across the lifespan
  • Proficiency in common procedures and point-of-care testing
  • Knowledge of military-specific medical conditions and treatments
  • Understanding of deployment medicine and occupational health
  • Familiarity with military culture and healthcare delivery systems

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work 12-hour shifts and respond to emergency situations
  • Manual dexterity for performing clinical procedures and examinations
  • Physical stamina to work in various hospital departments and potentially austere environments
  • Ability to lift and position patients up to 50 pounds with assistance
  • Visual and auditory acuity adequate for patient assessment and equipment operation

Schedule and Coverage Requirements

  • Full-time position: 40 hours per week
  • Rotating shift coverage including days, evenings, and weekends
  • Holiday and call coverage as assigned
  • Potential 24-hour duty assignments
  • Flexibility for emergency response and mass casualty situations
  • Continuing education time allocation
